How to organize B-roll footage so it can be reused

B-roll is valuable because it can be reused. The problem is that it often disappears inside old project folders, camera cards, exported timelines, and loosely named files.

Start from how you will search later

Most B-roll systems are designed around where a file came from: client, date, camera, project, or export. That matters, but it is not how you remember footage six months later.

When you need a cutaway, you usually remember the visual job: a hand detail, a city texture, a slow push-in, a clean product angle, or a transition moment.

  • Keep folders for ownership, source, and project history.
  • Add a shot-level layer for the moments you expect to reuse.
  • Search by visible content instead of only by filename.

Choose the reusable shots instead of processing everything

A useful B-roll library does not require every frame of every file to be analyzed. It is usually better to start with the footage you already reach for often.
