How to organize B-roll footage so it can be reused

You know you filmed the right establishing shot, close-up, or transition—but when the next edit starts, you cannot remember which folder or file contains it. This tutorial turns that scattered B-roll into a reusable library you can search by what is visible in the shot. B-roll is supporting footage used around the main scene; the five steps below take it from protected source to searchable shot and back into your edit.
What a finished B-roll library should contain
A reusable B-roll library does not require one perfect folder system. It needs several responsibilities to remain clear: where the original file lives, how it is protected, which moments are reusable, and how those moments can be found later.
The practical end state is simple: your originals remain inside familiar project folders, while reusable moments can also be browsed and searched as individual shots without losing their connection to the source video.

Use this category template as a starting point
These categories describe the visual job a shot can perform. They are a starting point, not a rule: keep the project folders that already work and adapt the categories to the footage you actually reuse.
- People and actions: hands working, walking, typing, making, talking, or reacting.
- Locations and atmosphere: establishing shots, streets, rooms, weather, crowds, and quiet mood.
- Product and object details: packaging, controls, materials, close-ups, and demonstrations.
- Camera movement: push-ins, pans, tracking shots, handheld motion, and reveals.
- Transitions and textures: reflections, foreground wipes, light changes, abstract detail, and visual bridges.
Step 1: gather and protect the source footage
Start with one completed project, one camera card, or one frequently reused B-roll folder. Keep the originals inside a predictable structure such as client or project, shoot date, and camera or source.
Before reorganizing irreplaceable footage, make and verify an independent backup. Do not move or rename everything just to make it searchable; a retrieval layer should work alongside the source structure, not erase it.
- Keep original camera files separate from proxies, selects, and final exports.
- Record enough source context to identify the project, date, and rights owner.
- Test that important footage can be restored from backup before treating the archive as safe.
Step 2: choose shots worth reusing
Do not begin by analyzing every frame in the archive. Review the material as shots and keep the moments that could solve a future editing problem outside their original project.
- Keep shots with a clear subject, action, location, lighting condition, camera move, or texture.
- Prefer shots that are long and stable enough to use, or whose motion has a clear beginning and end.
- Keep source and rights information with every candidate.
- Skip accidental clips, unusable focus, repeated takes with no distinct value, and material you cannot legally reuse.
Step 3: build the searchable shot layer
Import the selected local videos into ShotMind and split them into individual shots. Review the shot cards first, then choose only the clips worth analyzing instead of paying to process weak or duplicate material.

Step 4: search the way you remember the shot
Broad manual tags such as office, product, or outdoor are useful for grouping, but they rarely capture the exact visual moment. Combine the subject with an action, setting, light, mood, composition, or camera movement.
Treat the results as a shortlist. Scan several candidates, preview the promising shots, and refine the query when the first result set is too broad.

A real example: finding close-up candidates in 163 analyzed shots
In the recorded test above, the library contained 163 analyzed shots from two openly licensed Blender films. Searching for close-up produced 50 results shown out of about 85 candidates.
Useful results included faces, a hand with a control surface, and object or texture details. The same list also contained a title card, wider character views, and a landscape-like frame. This is why search should narrow the library, not make the final editorial decision.
Step 5: return to the source and your editor
Open or preview the promising result, check its time range and neighboring context, then return to the original file before choosing it for an edit. This protects you from using a visually similar moment with the wrong action, duration, continuity, or rights context.
